WATER CONSERVATION/POLLUTION PREVENTION
Rain Gardens
The rain garden at MWS has been a great
accomplishment by the students and volunteers. Over the last few years,
we have worked hard to maintain the rain garden. Below are copies of the
lesson plans from Blue Water Baltimore on how to maintain the rain
garden. Blue Water Baltimore played an instrumental part in helping our
school establish and maintain the rain garden. We have helped the
environment by improving wildfire habitat and water quality, reduced noise
and air pollution, and created a place to enjoy the outdoors. Students in
all grades assisted with the rain garden activities and plans. In addition,
all students received lessons and further instructions on how to maintain the
rain garden.
Rain Barrels
The Rain barrels that our school installed helps to
conserve water and help lower costs (a rain barrel can save approximately 1,300
gallons of water during peak summer months). The rain barrels
reduce water pollution by reducing stormwater runoff, which can contain
pollutants like sediment, oil, grease, bacteria and nutrients. Blue Water
Baltimore helped our students build inexpensive rain barrels. Again
almost all the students had a hand in helping to get the rain barrels installed
in the Upper Building and the Lower Building. Blue Water Baltimore taught
the students about the benefits of having rain barrels and the purpose.
