ENVIRONMENTAL BEHAVIOR CHANGES
Email and Online Notifications
The
Mount Washington School has adopted the digital method for general outreach and
school wide notifications to parents. We
are a very active school and there is a lot of information to share with
parents. There is a weekly newsletter,
known as The Tuesday Folder, sent out to all parents every Tuesday. This is done by emailing all parents the link
to it and by posting it on the school website every week. There are often several pdf flyers attached
to The Tuesday Folder, advertising upcoming school events. Before going digital with all notifications,
these Tuesday Folders were printed and sent home with every student once a
week. The digital method of
communication with parents has greatly reduced the use of paper.
In addition, The Tiger Times is a monthly publication that goes out electronically to every parent. Again, The Tiger Times was formerly printed and paper copies were sent home with students. The Mount Washington is very pleased that we made the switch to saving paper by sending these publications out electronically.

Waste Free Learning Tools
At
The Mount Washington School every classroom is equipped with a promethean
board. The board is an interactive
learning tool that allows teachers to perform classroom exercises on the boards
and can involve the students. On these
electronic boards, teachers can present new material or review old
materials. Students have the opportunity
to write, circle, and move information on the electronic board. Consistent with the charge given by school
administration, these boards are used daily in every class. Teachers lead group exercises and one-on-one
exercises using the promethean boards that would otherwise require paper. The daily use of these boards drastically
reduces the use of paper.

Teachers of middle school grades have adopted the use of Classroom Blogs for class discussions and homework. The Classroom Blogs provide a forum for students and teachers to have lively online discussions on class topics and students are able to submit homework assignments online through the Classroom Blog. Furthermore, teachers are able to post assignments on the blog that would otherwise be printed and handed out to the students. For example, in Mr. Kaiser’s Social Studies class, students were given a homework assignment to read an online article. They were then asked to answer questions about the article on the Classroom Blog. This is a great example of how the Classroom Blog reduces the use of paper for class assignments and homework. Students were able to read the article by clicking a link from the Classroom Blog, which eliminated the need to print the article and distribute paper copies to 58 kids. Then, the 58 kids were able to submit their homework directly online to the Classroom Blog without using any paper.

Additionally,
for several of the older grades, the text books are available online. One set
of the text books are available in the classroom for use in school. At home, students access the online
books. This greatly reduces the use of
paper by decreasing the number of books distributed to students. Parents also have access to the blog, so they
are able to see the work of their children.
This eliminates the need to send home paper newsletters to parents.
