STUDENT DRIVEN SUSTAINABILITY PRACTICES
Healthy School Environment
Monthly Eco Challenges - Awards
Taking a tip from our Green Team friends at Johns Hopkins, Eco-Smart Challenges are given monthly to Mt. Washington Scholars. From Recycling Re-matches, to Compost Collections to Best Energy Conservation to Natural Meal. All challenges are brought to give voice to the many healthy aspects of living green. When students compete and document their success, we all win. Prizes are typically indoor plants that can adorn their classroom or hallway. It is a healthy green brag tag trophy delivering a breath of fresh air indoors.
These Eco-Challenges as well as other school-wide green topics are displayed on the Green Board. Though it does use paper, one well designed paper from our Green Leaders can inform the 300 students in the Upper Building. That 300 to 1 ratio is the use of our Energy Captains's Tool Rule. A paper saver.

Ms. Whorley's Running Club to Track & Field Day
"Ms. Whorley is the fastest teacher in the whole school" one student told me. I agreed, and everybody else did too. Her running club in the upper building had more than speed. It had pride! It inspired young scholars in the lower building to make their own running clubs at recess. To this day, Bella's running club meets on Wednesdays to compete with each other for fun and for health. That is Tiger Pride!
MWS students celebrated in a track and field day. Not only fun and games, though leaning is much easier in a fun direction. Students learned new games that involved teamwork as well as individual strengths. Exercise for health and well-being was key. We walked up and back to the soccer field and still had energy to compete. Our young tigers are bound with strength, perseverance and energy!

Planting and Harvesting for the Fall Festival
Every year MWS students plant, grow and harvest vegetables and sweet potatoes in the Outdoor Classroom. The students designed the vegetable and sweet potato beds in the spring, then maintain the area throughout the year. In November, the students harvest and make and enjoy healthy snacks and dishes made from the vegetables and sweet potatoes. We find there is more to eat than what we see in the stores. Carrot roots are what we see on sale, but carrot tops make a perfecto pesto! Re-thinking is first before recycling to the compost.

Gas Safety
Gas was smelled on the street between the two school building in 2017 and BGE was called. Energy Captains ran with Captain Mercaptain's safety instruction through comic heros. Our Energy Captains learned about Gas safety, and expressed their knowledge through comic making. To promote this school wide safety program, the captains ran a super-hero contest from K-3rd grade. Winners received further information on gas safety including an official Captain Mercaptain Comic book and invitation to create their own super-hero outfits from recycled material at Energy Captains Club. All scholars were appreciated for their entries on what they learned and shared about gas safety. We have not smelled the "rotten-egg" smell of mercaptain from then on. Congratulations Captains!
