SIXTH GRADE
Irvine Nature Center
The sixth grade classes, approximately 60 students, visited the Irvine Nature Center on May 7, 2013 to do a Stream Study. This program was in coordination with their 6th grade Environmental Science unit. The Upstream Downstream Program was presented in the classroom for pre and post visit outreach activities. Irvine Nature Center is an outdoor laboratory that serves as an extension of the classroom allowing Baltimore City Public Schools' students to connect classroom curriculum to the world around them through hands-on, real world experiences.
Terrapin Adventures
At the beginning of the school year the sixth grade class attends a team building activity. This year, the group attended Terrapin Adventures. This program encourages the students to build confidence and fitness while providing lessons not learned in traditional classrooms. While they enjoyed the great outdoors, the students were educated about the local flora and fauna, the Chesapeake Bay watershed, the forest, local history, and what we can do to protect the environment.
SEVENTH GRADE
Recycling
Recycling is very important at MWS. Ms. Thomas, the science teacher, has the 7th grade students participate in the Upper Building recycling program. Not only does the entire school recycle, the 7th grade students are responsible for taking the recyclables out every Wednesday. There are about 60-70 students and they rotate recycling assignments each week. Below are examples of the students work. On Earth Day last year, the students made drawings about community recycling.
EIGTH GRADE
Service Learning Project
Students begin in middle school to earn service learning hours. In order to earn hours, each student in the eighth grade 8 also participated in recycling in the upper school building at least three times to show their mastery of how to properly recycle items in January 2013. Baltimore City representatives taught the students by giving them a demonstration on how to recycle and what can be properly placed in a recycle bin for the city to pick up. The students earned service learning credit. In addition, there are pictures below from class lessons about recycling.
