SUMMARY
The Mount Washington School (#221) is a public K-8 Baltimore City school located in the historic neighborhood of Mt. Washington. The Mount Washington School is currently certified as a Maryland Green School. Now in our fourth/fifth year as being a certified green school, we continue to increase our commitment to being green. “Green" has become a way of life at The Mount Washington School and we are very proud of our accomplishments throughout the years. Most importantly, our school has built and maintained an outstanding Outdoor Classroom. With help from the community, the Outdoor Classroom is one of the best assets for the school. The students and teachers use the Outdoor Classroom as much as possible during the school year, especially for our annual events such as the Walk-A-Thon, Earth Day Celebration and Fall Festival.
The Mount Washington School incorporates environmental instruction in all of the grades in subjects of math, reading, science, art, and Music. Students are recycling, maintaining the school grounds and conserving water. In addition, students at Mount Washington have many practices in place to improve the environment. Our four main areas of focus are water conservation, solid waste reduction, structures for environmental learning and responsible transportation. Furthermore, the teachers and principal are committed to promoting green initiatives in their classroom lessons. Mount Washington ensures that students celebrate their accomplishments by hosting Earth Day Celebration, Harvest Festival Fall Festivals, Walk to School Day, the Green Student Leadership Council and Energy Captains Club. Our students and teachers are eager to continue the work of making our school greener.

MWS TOP FIVE ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Inspiration and Outreach
The MWS Green Committee is empowered by the basic knowledge that our youth have and share, that we are global citizens and guardians or our planet! This fundamental ideology empowers us all to care about each other and the world around us. With so many ways to explore this truth, we are a stand and outreach for our world wide sustainability. We may be small, but we have many voices that harmonize together to care about our Earth which cares so much for us. Our outreach starts local, and grows as we grow.
Maintain and Use Outdoor Classroom and Rain Garden
The MWS Outdoor Classroom and blacktop area includes an amphitheatre, blacktop for instruction through play, an aqueduct, four vegetable planting beds, and many native plantings. The Outdoor Classroom not only is a target for substantial run-off but also our students have learned about water conservation, first hand, in our very own Outdoor Classroom. The Outdoor Classroom is used by all grade level teachers. The Outdoor Classroom is used for our annual Earth Day Celebration, Fall Festival, -Walk-A-Thon, Sunfest and other community related events.
The Green Committee continues to plant and maintain a prairie and rain garden at the foot of the hillside Prairie Garden planted above the school playground with volunteers from the school and the Mt. Washington Preservation Trust community gardeners.
Recycling Efforts
MWS students are committed to recycling. Students and staff recycle all paper and all forms of containers. There are paper recycling bins in every classroom and throughout the upper and lower buildings. Energy Captains and Green Leaders have created processes of recycling collectioin to weigh and audit. Every week during the morning announcements winning classrooms are celebrated, students are assigned to take the recycle bins outside for pick-up.
Fall Festival
Every year MWS students plant, grow and harvest vegetables and sweet potatoes in the Outdoor Classroom. The students designed the sweet potato beds and maintain the area throughout the year. In November, the students make and enjoy healthy snacks and dishes made from sweet potatoes, learn about preservation methods and solar to chemical energy transfer.
Earth Day Celebration
The Mount Washington School hosts the annual Mount Washington Earth Day Celebration. It was a very labor-intensive organizing effort and were joined by numerous other environmentally-friendly businesses and organizations from the Baltimore community. The event raised awareness of “green” issues and the steps that people could take to reduce their carbon footprint and stimulate the emerging green economy in their neighborhood. The celebration features local service and product providers focusing on energy efficient, environmentally sustainable, and eco-friendly offerings. Students from Green Leaders and Energy Captains Club share green projects, games and skits with their classmates. Scholars review the ammounts of recycling, composting, and energy saved through their green practices.
