WALK TO SCHOOL DAY
Every October, MWS students in grades K-8 participate in the International Walk to School Day. Students and parents gather at four different locations – the highest elevation locations within the Mt. Washington community. Students carry signs to promote walking safety for both drivers and walkers. Once the children reach school, they gather in the outdoor classroom for a refreshing fruit and water snack that is provided by Whole Foods in Mt. Washington. The students also receive special stickers to celebrate their efforts for walking to school and getting the word out about walking safety to the neighborhood.
Families are invited to giving walking to school a try even if their normal mode of transportation is to ride in a car. This event was a great way to encourage a reduction in car usage. The MWS Green Committee is seeking to significantly shorten the daily carpool lane as a means to improve environmental health around the school. More walkers will mean less gas being wasted by idling cars and less fumes being inhaled by students and staff.
