STUDENT DRIVEN SUSTAINABILITY PRACTICES
Habitat Restoration
Energy Captains Tiger Path
After a year of planting maintenance with the results of crushed plants under child feet, the Energy Captains installed a walking path to bring a helpful function to outdoor design. We installed a logical and beautiful walkway in the natural walking path. This upgrade allowed students to traverse the clear, guided path and not stomp the natural growth. The resulting front garden that shows our Mt. Washington School sign framed in a beautiful life pleasing garden that shows our tiger pride.

LeafMulch
Erosion is a battle that the Green Committee is combating. We are using a natural method of leaf mulching the hills and allowing indigenous plants to survive there. Collecting the leaves, stomping to mulch, and distributing on the hillside does wonders. Our kids get involved in an annual duty, exercising all the way, and give nutrition back to the soil while creating a natural erosion barrier. Wood chip mulch lays on the leaf mulch to keep things in place. Who would have thought throwing leaf parties could be so fun. The kids know.

Native Tree and Shrub Planting
Putting in over 80 native plants and trees in the area help to create a habitat where bugs and wildlife can be a part of our future. Working with Master Gardeners and experts from the Mt. Washington Preservation Trust we get deeper insights as to the types of trees and plants help our local area. From information on the food web and erosion, choosing the right plant for the right place helps everything from our microscopic life in the soil, through all the life the native plants sustain, to the very air we breath.

Removing invasive plants
Solar Sucking Weeds as we call them are targeted with "most wanted" posters and cards to identify and remove. Indiginous weeds are transplanted to better areas to combat erosion and give chemical energy to native insects. The foundation of our food webs starts with the plants local to our area. To counteract our human footprint, it is more than carbon. It is our actual footprint on plants that can effect what life can be supported. Our food web is under our footprint. If we tread properly, life will flourish.
