Soccer Practice
The Mount Washington School soccer teams opted to have the students walk to practice rather than arrange for a bus or have multiple parents driving in support of our green school initiatives. The team practiced on an average of two days per week for about ten consecutive weeks. The walking distance to the Northwest Soccer Fields is one mile from the school. Overall, our students walked approximately 32 miles during the soccer season! There were three soccer teams ranging from grade 3 to grade 8.
Michael Phelps Swim School
From the period of September 4, 2013 to October 30, 2013, approximately 60 sixth grade students walked to Michael Phelps Swim School twice a week for swimming lessons. The Michael Phelps Swim School is located approximately 6 blocks from the school. Since 2012, all sixth grade classes attend the Michael Phelps Swim School for lessons in the beginning of the year and in the spring. This year students will continue lessons in April.
Students enjoy these walking field trips and learn that walking to places they need to go to helps save fuel and reduces the air pollution. The students learn that they can walk to places in their community instead of taking a bus or riding in a car. They are encouraged to walk to reduce their carbon footprint.
