STUDENT DRIVEN SUSTAINABILITY PRACTICES

Energy Audits
Our Energy Captains (K-3) take weekly energy and recycling audits that note weekly class winners as well as move recycling product for collection. Energy audits take place in our lower building every Friday after school to ensure our weekend use of electricity is minimized. Our Captains work in teams to record the amounts of lights, fans, and electrical use through the classrooms. We turn off unused electricity for the weekend. Squadron leaders have the choice of reporting the findings to the group individually or as a team. This practice of "Kool Kids Korner" allows all Captains to listen better as a respectful audience as well as bolster public speaking confidence, and leadership.

Energy Captains Educate on Energy Conservation
Instruction on how energy is transferred from form and type shows intellectually how we loose energy. Instruction on how to mitigate our loss of energy directly impacts our practice of conservation. Energy Captains helped to write the presentation on "Energy Thieves" in October 2017 and present the power point regularly at Energy Captain Club meetings. Our captains learn hands on about energy types and forms. We create challenges from measuring amount of static electricity to using elastic energy to power robots.

Students Place Energy Saving Tips on Light and Fan Switches
Energy Captains place energy saving tips on lights in, and share knowledge of energy transfer and waste to students. Energy Conservation stickers were placed on classroom wall switches in April 2016 after learning energy conservation tips from Baltimore Energy Challenge. A power down day was accompanied by demonstrations of energy savings was presented as the stickers were placed as a reminder. Our Energy Captains continue to remind the classes and take pride in teaching this lesson to fellow scholars. Our classes continue to try and use only some of lights and fans when possible. Our Captains remind their classes and take pride in their part to conserve energy and save the planet!

Power Down Day
Mount Washington took part in a power down day on Earth Day 2016. We worked with Baltimore Energy Challenge to power down the school and use our grounds to educate about the Earth's wonders. See Celebrations for Earth Day Details.
